The PAO is seeking an experienced construction law attorney to join the Contracts and Finance Section of our Civil Division.  If you seek challenging, meaningful work and a chance to "give back" to your community while working in a collegial office and maintaining a healthy work-life balance, this opportunity may be for you.  As the in-house law firm for County government, the Civil Division collaborates with client agencies to develop, fund, deliver, manage, and defend public projects, legislation, and initiatives that affect every aspect of civil society   The Contracts and Finance Section represents King County agencies in the procurement and administration of contracts for goods, information technology systems and services, professional services, and construction services.

Job Duties

This position primarily advises the King County Wastewater Treatment Division, an agency within the King County Department of Natural Resources and Parks.  The Wastewater Treatment Division operates King County’s regional wastewater system, serving approximately 1.8 million people, and has an active capital project program.  The position involves providing legal assistance to the client on contract administration, claims review, and dispute resolution issues arising out of construction projects.  Funding for this position is secure.

Experience, Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

The successful candidate should have three or more years of experience handling construction contract claims and disputes, public or private (public contract law knowledge desired, but not required).  The candidate should also have knowledge and experience:

  • with alternative dispute processes, preparing a case for trial, conducting discovery, and participating in a trial;
  • working on construction claims for added compensation and time, delay damages, impact damages, and substantive law surrounding these issues;
  • with alternate project delivery methods, such as design-build and GCCM; and
  • working with engineers and scheduling and damages experts.   

We are looking for candidates with excellent analytical, legal research and writing ability, substantive knowledge and experience on construction law issues, and great interpersonal communication skills. This is NOT an entry level position.  

Salary depends on experience.  This position includes the county's generous benefits package.

Supplemental Information

TEMPORARY TELECOMMUTING REQUIREMENT
The work associated with this position will be performed remotely, through July 7, 2021, in compliance with King County’s telecommuting mandate. Once the telecommuting mandate is lifted, the work associated with this position will permanently be performed remotely up to 50% of the time. Employees will be provided with a County issued laptop and must maintain a workspace with an internet connection where they can reliably perform work and remain available and responsive during scheduled work hours.  Employees must reside in WA state and within a reasonable distance to their King County worksite to respond to workplace reporting requirements.  There will be situations where the employee is required to report to a County worksite.  Please note that when an employee conducts work that is likely to bring them in contact with another individual, safety precautions are required by the department in alignment with the Public Health Directive from the Seattle & King County Public Health Officer.
