Implementation of the Lesbos model in the Canary Islands

Question for written answer E-001163/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sira Rego (The Left)
The Canary Islands Plan consists of the installation of macro detention camps for migrants on the islands, financed by the AMIF. This outermost region of the EU[1] has six centres, which are managed by NGOs and the IOM.
The one in Las Raíces (Tenerife) has tents to accommodate 2500 people in an area with an extreme climate. Some of the Malians who have been in the Canary Islands for four months have requested protection, but have received no response. Others have camped in front of the centre, protesting because they have not been transferred to the mainland. The La Laguna town council condemns the fact that these people have been marginalised.[2]
The blockade to which these people have fallen victim — which is also visible at airports —, the lack of transparency in the management of the situation and the structure of the camps are all reminiscent of the Lesbos model.
- 1.How much money has the Commission allocated to Spain to build these camps?
- 2.Is the Commission replicating the hotspot model implemented in Italy and Greece without having taken the formal steps to do so?
- 3.Does the Commission consider that international standards governing reception and protection are being observed at the Las Raíces centre?
