CDC Office and Location: A research opportunity is currently available with the Health Informatics Branch, in the Division of Field Studies and Engineering (DFSE), National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH), at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in Cincinnati, Ohio.
The Health Informatics Branch is a multidisciplinary team of approximately 30 scientists, IT, and administrative specialists, and contractors. Our mission is to monitor risk factors and health outcomes of work-related illnesses, injuries and hazards within the U.S. workforce. The intent is to provide both early detection of emerging problems and continuous assessment of the magnitude and trends of job-related illnesses and hazards. Findings from public health surveillance studies are used to guide prevention and intervention efforts. They are often used to establish new CDC and NIOSH public health policies, and to strengthen occupational health regulations.
Research Project: The ORISE research fellow will be assigned to The Sentinel Event Notification System for Occupational Risk (SENSOR)-Pesticides program (https://www.cdc.gov/niosh/topics/pesticides/). Under this program, NIOSH provides cooperative agreement funding and technical support to state health departments to conduct surveillance on acute occupational pesticide-related illness and injury. As part of the fellowship program, the ORISE fellow will conduct public health surveillance studies of acute pesticide-related illness and injury, with a focus on work-related exposures. Under the guidance of a mentor, who is a senior epidemiologist, the fellow will be involved in the following activities:
Learning Objectives: This appointment will offer the opportunity for multidisciplinary collaboration with epidemiologists, clinicians, industrial hygienists, statisticians, and experts in information technology working both within and external to the CDC. To provide the maximum benefit for our fellow, this fellowship will be in-person and in Cincinnati, OH.

Anticipated Appointment Start Date: November 2022. Start date is flexible and will depend on a variety of factors.
Appointment Length: The appointment will initially be for one year, but may be renewed upon recommendation of CDC and is contingent on the availability of funds.
Level of Participation: The appointment is full-time.
Participant Stipend: The participant will receive a monthly stipend commensurate with educational level and experience.
Citizenship Requirements: This opportunity is available to U.S. citizens and Lawful Permanent Residents (LPR).
ORISE Information: This program, administered by ORAU through its contract with the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) to manage the Oak Ridge Institute for Science and Education (ORISE), was established through an interagency agreement between DOE and CDC. Participants do not become employees of CDC, DOE or the program administrator, and there are no employment-related benefits. Proof of health insurance is required for participation in this program. Health insurance can be obtained through ORISE.

The qualified candidate should have received a master's degree in one of the relevant fields, or be currently pursuing the degree to be received by December 30, 2022. Degree must have been received within the past five years.
