Product compliance and related costs

Question for written answer E-001524/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Sandro Gozi (Renew)
The benefits of CE marking and technical standards and rules used to certify the conformity, quality and safety of products are undeniable. However, the lack of technical guidance often makes it difficult for firms on the ground to deal with the issue of product compliance in practice. If firms are to meet mandatory requirements - and thus operate on the single market - easy, affordable access to information about reference standards and to testing and certification centres is essential.
- 1.How does the Commission intend to remedy this state of affairs as part of the revival of the single market?
- 2.Can the cost of certification be assessed in advance, and can small and medium-sized enterprises be helped with this process? The Commission should certainly take this matter into account in its current review of the ‘Better Law-making’ process, as the cost of complying with rules can have a crucial bearing on firms' day-to-day management decisions.
