SOME RELIEF FROM TESTING IN PE!

Hello Fairhill Families

As I am sure you have heard, we are in end of year testing season this week! Our students in grades 3-6 will take the math SOL this week, our students in 1st and 2nd have taken the iReady, and our K students are busy doing 1:1 assessments with their classroom teachers.

We value your partnership with the school and understand that many families will want to know their child’s scores. Our preliminary data is looking incredible! Our students have worked so hard. Below is the timeline for when the information will be released to families. All information is released via ParentVue. If you need help getting the ParentVue app, please contact the main office.

  • Kindergarten - VKRP/PALS: Sent via USPS week of 7/8
  • Gr. 1-3 - iReady: week of 6/3 in ParentVUE
  • Gr. 4-6 iReady: week of 6/24 in ParentVUE
  • Gr. 3-6 - SOLs: Week of June 3rd

In partnership,

Ted & Maura

Thank you Fairhill Community!

A HUGE thank you to our wonderful PTA and our community for all the goodies, gifts and volunteering last week!

A Special thanks to Paris Baguette for providing desserts on Monday for the entire staff, lunch on Wednesday for the entire staff, and breakfast on Thursday for the entire staff.

We would also like to thank Matchbox for providing lunch for the entire staff on Friday.

A Note from the Library

Per FCPS regulations, all library book circulation stops two weeks before the end of school. This means that all books are due back to the library by Wednesday, May 29th. Please begin helping your student(s) by reminding them to find and return any books that are currently overdue. Thank you for your assistance in this matter!

Dear Farihill Families

As we step into May, we start off with National Teacher Appreciation Week, May 6th - 10th! This week provides us with a wonderful opportunity to express our gratitude to the incredible Fairhill teachers and staff who change the lives of our students each and every day. Our teachers and staff are the backbone of Fairhill. They dedicate countless hours to nurturing, teaching, and inspiring our students to reach their full potential. Thank you to our staff.

Below is a calendar of events that our Fairhill PTA, in partnership with Fairhill administration, are putting together to celebrate our teachers and staff next week. Please take a moment to review the superhero activity for Thursday that provides an opportunity for students to share the impact of their teachers. A copy of the activity was sent out in last week's Tuesday folder.

Thank you for all of your continued support, next week especially, of all things Fairhill. Connections to our community is one of our greatest assets.

Enjoy this upcoming 3 day weekend, as May 3rd is a teacher workday and no school for students.

All our best,

The end of the year will be here before we blink an eye and we are currently planning for the next school year. Class placements are an essential component of learning and building community. Lockdown Drill

Keeping students and staff safe is a priority for all of us. We have a crisis management and emergency preparedness plan for our school that is reviewed and updated regularly. Our plan includes procedures on how to respond to incidents such as fires and tornadoes. Students and staff regularly practice these drills every school year. We also practice lockdown drills.

A new Virginia Law (22.1-137.2) requires schools to notify parents at least 24 hours before a school practices a lockdown drill. However, we are not required to share the exact date and time of the drill. We are required to practice lockdown drills two times a year. FCPS lockdown drills do not include any type of active shooter scenario training, they are instruction and classroom based.

We will conduct a lockdown drill at our school on Friday, April 22. Our pre-kindergarten and kindergarten students are exempt from mandatory participation in lockdown drills during the first 60 days of the school year. They will participate in this lockdown drill.

Additional information on our lockdown drill program to include parent tips and FAQs can be found on the Emergency Planning and Crisis Response web page. After reviewing this content, you should discuss the value of these safety drills with your child.

Keeping our school safe and secure for all students and staff involves the participation of the entire school community, and we thank you for your help to keep our school safe.

News from FCPS Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

The Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) employs school health aides and public health nurses who provide school health services to the students in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS). To determine the quality of these services, a survey has been developed by the FCHD to be shared with all parents or guardians of FCPS students. Parents/guardians will be asked for feedback on the level of satisfaction with School Health services provided to the school community. The survey will be distributed electronically via FCPS This Week. The survey window is April 15 - April 26, 2024. Survey link: www.redcap.link/FCHDSchoolHealthSurvey.

Survey results will provide a basis for quality improvement of School Health services. The data-driven process is in alignment with the FCPS Strategic planning process, and the survey results will contribute positively to the FCPS Strategic Plan that reflects a shared consensus among stakeholders.

Warm Week

CONGRATULATIONS MS. GALLAHAN-ZARATE FOR BEING OUR REGION 2 OUTSTANDING NEW ELEMENTARY TEACHER OF THE YEAR!

Hello Fairhill Families!

We hope you are enjoying this lovely sunny spring weather we are having.  It is a beautiful change of pace from the dreary past few weeks!

This week we would like to thank the Fairhill PTA for all they do.  We look forward to seeing you here this Thursday, April 11 for the PTA meet and greet at 6:00 pm.  Light refreshments will be served and the meeting will follow at 6:30 pm.  Childcare will be provided, so please join us.

Looking ahead, it’s hard to believe that our first end-of-year exam (SOL) starts as early as twenty days from now for some of our students. With all of the excitement building up, please be sure to keep attendance strong from now until the end of the school year. Our school goal is to have fewer than 10% of students missing 10% or less of school. Last year, Fairhill’s chronic absenteeism rose by over 3% in the last 9 days of school. We have an abundance of special activities to look forward to during our last nine weeks of school. Please be sure to have your students in school every day until June 12th.

As a reminder, tomorrow, April 10th, is a school holiday for all students and staff.

In partnership,

Ted & Maura

FAIRHILL TEACHERS WORKING HARD AT STAFF DEVELOPMENT DAY

Hello Fairhill Families!

We hope you had a wonderful spring break and had an opportunity to reconnect with family and relax. Today at Fairhill, we had our 2024/25 Kindergarten Orientation. It was such a special moment to welcome new families to our school.. As you all know, we take our connections to the community very seriously and today was an amazing opportunity to connect with our newest families.

Looking ahead, please be sure to review the dates below with special attention to our upcoming Parent Coffee this Thursday, April 4th at 9:30 am.   We also have our Garden Day on April 20 and our Career Fair on April 26.  As we approach this fourth and final quarter of school, we are staying laser focused on student achievement and ensuring that students are receiving high quality teaching and learning opportunities each and every day of school.

As always, please feel free to reach out if you have any feedback or suggestions about making Fairhill a better place.

In Partnership,

Ted & Maura

Join the Fairhill community and turn FCPS purple on Purple Up! Day, Wednesday, April 17.

Each year our nation designates April as the Month of the Military Child to recognize and thank children from military families for the sacrifices they make living the military lifestyle. The recognition is part of the legacy of former Defense Secretary Casper Weinberger who established the commemoration in 1986. During the month, one day is selected as the day to "Purple Up! For Military Kids" and all school personnel and students are encouraged to wear purple in recognition of the strength and sacrifices of military-connected youth (MCY).

Why Purple?

Purple is the color that symbolizes all branches of the military, as it is the combination of Army Green, Coast Guard Blue, Air Force Blue, Marine Red, Space Force Blue, and Navy Blue.

Military-connected youth face unique circumstances living the military lifestyle. By understanding the lifestyle of military-connected youth we can better meet their needs as they transition with their family members who serve our nation.

Currently, over 14,000 military-connected youth call FCPS home.

Celebrating the Month of the Military Child provides a powerful opportunity to raise awareness and build support to help these children meet the unique challenges they face! It is an opportunity to recognize and thank military children and youth for their heroism, character, courage, sacrifices, and continued resilience.

The Fairhill Elementary Career Fair is right around the corner!

We have set this year’s date for Friday April 26, 2024 from 1:15-3:30. This time will allow our career fair to come to a close with the option to exit the building before dismissal at 4:05. Participating parents may wait to pick up their children at dismissal.

News from FCPS Safety during a solar eclipse

A solar eclipse is happening on April 8, 2024. It's a rare and exciting astronomical phenomenon, and one that requires important safety reminders. Looking directly at the sun, even during an eclipse, can permanently damage your eyes.

Here's what you need to know:

  • Don't look at the sun without approved eyewear. This applies to students and staff, and we encourage you to reinforce this at home.
  • Regular sunglasses are not good enough. The NASA website has more information about eye safety.
  • Eclipse timing: The eclipse starts around 2:04 p.m., peaks at 3:20 p.m., and ends around 4:32 p.m. Dismissal at Farihill will happen during the eclipse.  Please remind your child to be especially vigilant about eye safety during dismissal.

For more details, visit the FCPS Solar Eclipse webpage.

News from Fairfax County Health Dept. Fairfax County Health Department (FCHD) School Health Services Internal Survey

Measles is making headlines as the number of cases nationwide has topped 40, with three confirmed cases in people living in or traveling through the National Capital Region.

The good news is that measles is preventable through vaccination! Vaccines help teach the immune system how to defend against germs, helping to build up natural defenses. Give your child the best protection against measles with two doses of the Measles-Mumps-Rubella (MMR) vaccine. Visit the Fairfax County Health Department’s website to find out more about measles.

  • Tutor.com Teacher-Referred Tutoring Through Schoology®, all FCPS students have 24/7 access to no-cost, year-round, on-demand, 1-to-1 tutoring services through Tutor.com.

A new Teacher-Referred Tutoring program feature provides targeted support and extends student learning. Teachers can now refer students for tutoring, with their specific needs already identified. Students can get extra support — on their own schedule — and reinforce their in-class learning.

Caregivers can guide students to access expert tutoring, homework help, and writing support by clicking on the Tutor.com icon in their Schoology portal—anytime, anywhere.

Plus, look for teachers’ tutoring session referrals on the Tutor.com homepage.

News from FCPS Attendance Matters

Many of our youngest students miss 10 percent of the school year—about 18 days a year or just two days every month. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even preK, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance and retention in later grades, especially if the problem persists for more than a year. Do you know how many young children are chronically absent in your school or community?  Click here for more information and here for more information in Spanish.

BINGO!

Hello Fairhill Families!

It’s hard to believe that we are halfway through the school year!  As we walk the halls, spend time in the classrooms, and witness the friendships at recess, we see how well our Fairhill Tigers are doing. Students have settled into routines and are finding comfort with their expectations and relationships.  They are also working hard on their way to achieving their year end goals.

Our three core values are relationships, rigorous instruction and connections to our community. Speaking of connections to our community, there are still many ways to form and continue to build ongoing relationships with the Fairhill community.  Coming up in February we have one of our most significant events of the year.  Fairhill’s Cultural Heritage Night is loaded with opportunities to bond with and to learn more about others in our community. Save the date for February 23 from 6 pm to 8 pm!  It’s a celebration where we learn about and enjoy the different cultures, food and backgrounds of the people in our community!  See below to sign up for the fashion show or to bring a special dish that represents your culture.

Have a great week,

Ted & Courtney

Attendance Matters

Many of our youngest students miss 10 percent of the school year—about 18 days a year or just two days every month. Chronic absenteeism in kindergarten, and even preK, can predict lower test scores, poor attendance and retention in later grades, especially if the problem persists for more than a year. Do you know how many young children are chronically absent in your school or community?  Click here for more information and here for more information in Spanish.
