Need for additional support for our students and young people

Question for written answer  E-007079/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Lefteris Christoforou (PPE)

As a result of the pandemic, huge savings have been made in the EU budget for 2020. All the EU bodies and institutions have built up huge funds of unused allocations.

Those who will be most severely affected by the pandemic are our young people, our students and scientists. In particular, many students will have difficulty in covering their tuition fees and, as a result, may even be forced to stop studying.

I believe that this is an opportunity for unused allocations to be identified. We are asking for full, transparent information to be provided, and for those allocations to be channelled for the support of our students. They could also be made available for the support of young people who are unemployed and our young scientists.

In view of the above:

What are the total savings in allocations from the 2020 budget and how does the Commission plan to use them? Does it agree that our young people must be supported?
