General Statement of Duties


The Eugene Police Department has a full-time  Public Information Coordinator opportunity. This position assists in the coordination and provides administrative support to the public information and public relations program in the Eugene Police Department and provides technical and  administrative support to the Public Information Director to meet the organization’s needs.  
 
Assignments focus upon:

  • Video production and operating computer software programs for desktop publishing and design, website content and design, and administrative documents.
  • Assisting the director with day-to-day media relations activities such as preparing news releases, handling routine media calls and facilitating interviews between the media and department members for routine incidents, proactive crime prevention, and public service announcements.
  • Designing, maintaining and promoting the department’s website and social media. 
  • Designing and conducting media audits, and other surveys and evaluations as requested. 
  • Planning and implementing department events as requested. 
  • Observing Oregon public records laws and Eugene Police media practices. 

Salary Range: $26.81 - $33.42 hourly

Examples of Duties Performed - Duties may include but are not limited to the following

  • Designs and produces videos, marketing and informational fliers, Annual Report, websites, social media and other publications.
  • Manages the Department’s website and social media, pages and contents. Follows ongoing work plan, and assists other department members with website training and posting.
  • Maintains and provides compliance oversight for the Department’s branding guidelines for publications, videos, website, social media and other communications platforms.
  • May schedule, oversee the work activities of, and provide training to other support staff, temporary employees, and/or volunteers/interns.
  • Produces copywriting for awards certificates, brochures, public information materials, video scripts, website, and other communications as requested. 
  • Prepares and disseminates news releases, proactive crime prevention news releases, public service announcements and assists with day-to-day media relations activities. Aids the Public Information
  • Director in developing and implementing programs to ensure citizens are educated and informed of public safety issues.
  • Assists as a public information contact for the Eugene Police Department in response to routine inquiries from local, regional, and national media, other governmental agencies, and the community by coordinating and facilitating interviews between the media and department members who are involved in arrests or investigations that need to be shared with the media and the community.
  • Helps Public Information Director respond to emergency incidents for media management; provides timely incident news releases, web and social media updates.
  • Assists the Public Information director in developing and implementing strategic internal/external communications/community relations plans that address the Police Department’s and City’s goals and to resolve sensitive or critical issues.
  • Assists in conducting research to ascertain public opinion of public safety issues. 
  • Adheres to policies and procedures in the Police Department related to public information and the release of information in conformance with public records law; provides related guidance and advice to department managers as requested.
  • Records, archives and monitors content of all local newscasts; provides video copying services as needed.  Clips and retains newspaper articles and news releases; retains and stores for public records and historical value.
  • Serves as an information and reference resource to the public, responds to inquiries and keeps information current
  • May serve on a variety of City committees and task teams representing the department, and assists in the management of public relations activities for the Police Department.
  • Supports and respects diversity in the workplace.
  • Performs related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Knowledge of:
  • Videography/photography, including interviewing, video capture, editing, and production for news and features
  • Principles of journalism and television, radio, newspaper newsroom and website news practices, or the ability to learn.
  • Advanced knowledge of and ability to use software for publications copywriting and design, presentations and other communications formats.
  •  Website and social media development and maintenance.
  • Laws regarding release of information, public records, confidential records, personnel, and medical records or the ability to learn.
  • Research methods, techniques, and procedures or the ability to learn
  • Office practices, procedures, and equipment.

Minimum Requirements

Experience:
Four years of progressively responsible clerical or administrative support experience, including two years recent experience in videography, graphic design, publications/website production, technical/clerical support, and writing for public relations or business administration.
 
Training:
High school diploma or GED.  AA degree or post-secondary course work in graphic design preferred.
 
Other combinations of experience and education that meet the minimum requirements may be substituted.
 
License: 
Oregon Driver’s License (ODL) 
Valid Oregon driver’s license, or ability to obtain by date of hire; must pass driving records check and, if hired, maintain a driving record that meets the City’s standard. Oregon law requires that an out-of-state license holder must obtain a valid Oregon license (with appropriate endorsements) within 30 days of becoming domiciled in the state (ORS 803.355).

The normal starting salary is the first step shown on the posting. Other placement in the salary range may be considered depending on qualifications and experience.
