Local council supporting residents and businesses in the Braintree district.

About us

An area of contrasts, the Braintree District is an enjoyable and rewarding place to live and work. Just an hour from London in the heart of rural North Essex, Braintree District offers its visitors the quiet charm of the English Countryside, within 15 minutes of the County City of Chelmsford. The district is conveniently situated along the A12 and A120 investment corridors between London and the European ports of Felixstowe and Harwich, and is within 20 minutes drive of Stansted Airport. Constantly improving rail and road connections together with the development of Stansted Airport as London’s third airport have led to significant population and economic growth within the area. At Braintree District Council, our corporate strategy has been developed by asking our residents what is important to them, and how we can improve things. There are six priorities in our corporate strategy for 2020-2024: - Connecting people and places - Enhancing our environment - Supporting our communities - Promoting prosperity - Delivering and innovating Our staff and elected members are committed to delivering this strategy and, as we take our priorities forward, we will continue to consult with and listen to the views and opinions of our residents. Updates

  • New inclusive play area in Braintree made possible from Section 106 funding 🙌 A wheelchair accessible roundabout, swings suitable for different ages, a surface trampoline and sensory enrichment panels are some of the new equipment installed. Last year residents voted on the design with a 71% majority and we're so pleased to see how much local residents are loving these new facilities! 👏 It's been fantastic to utilise just under £146,000 of Section 106 contributions from local housing developers to bring this project forward to benefit our local communities directly. We continue to bring forward more improvements to the district from Section 106 that we are responsible for and we can't wait to share more as these progress! 🙌 #playarea #localgov #accessible #communities #section106 #planning

TE Connectivity, a world leader in connectivity and sensors, has opened a new advanced manufacturing facility on the Springwood Industrial Estate in #Braintree. The new site will engineer and manufacture shielding products, gaskets and components for use in defence, aerospace, telecommunications, automotive and medical industries. This significant investment follows on from the acquisition of Braintree company Kemtron two years ago. This new facility not only supports business growth and core continuity, but also enables large-scale volume manufacturing and product portfolio development. With centres established in regions across the globe, TE Connectivity is better equipped to meet evolving customer project needs. Moreover, these expanded capabilities allows the company to provide an extraordinary experience to targeted customers, thereby reinforcing its position as a leader in shielding and sealing markets.    Cllr Graham Butland (Leader of Braintree District Council and Deputy Cabinet Member at Essex County Council) and our Chairman Cllr Lyn Walters had the pleasure of joining employees and dignitaries at their opening ceremony last week.   Essex continues to attract innovative companies from around the world and this latest foreign direct investment from the United States is set to increase productivity, exports and foster economic growth and high skill employment in the local area. Together with our partners at Essex County Council, we can offer a range of services to support new investors and existing businesses in the region.   For more information, visit https://lnkd.in/ehpgcCvN

  • Exciting times! 🎉 This week planning permission has been approved for new three new floodlit 3G artificial grass pitches in Braintree and Witham! ⚽️ We listened and actioned on public feedback about wanting more availability of pitches due to increased demand and growing popularity of casual and small sided football 💬 The pitches are being made possible from combining over £1million of Section 106 funding that we helped to secure through the planning process from various local housing developments. Now we’ll be submitting the final funding applications to the Football Foundation for approval and if approved, progress will begin on the projects from Autumn this year! This will be of HUGE benefit to local grassroot sports clubs and communities, have a lasting impact on grassroots football and a positive impact on physical and mental health 🙏 And we continue to work hard to bring in more Section 106 financial contributions and actively encourage authorities to spend the funding and deliver infrastructure improvements to benefit our communities. #football #braintree #witham #section106 #community #sport #grassroots

  • 📢 Braintree businesses – have you heard about Lean2Green FREE business support? This project offers tailored, one to one support from Mike Russell of MKR Solutions Ltd, to help you cut carbon, increase productivity and make savings. Going green also helps to attract more customers and talent to your business, putting you in front of the competition. We have some spaces left but it’s first come, first served – apply here: https://wkf.ms/3T1IOw0 MediTECH (B.N.O.S. Meditech Ltd.) in Halstead recently joined the ranks of businesses receiving Lean2Green support. They told us about their experiences. BNOS Meditech, based in Halstead since 1989, designs, manufactures and exports ventilation, resuscitation and other medical gas products to over 100 countries worldwide. As a UK leading company in the field of medical gas equipment, Meditech sets standards for saving people’s lives. 🌍 Why did Meditech engage with the Lean2Green process? I saw a Lean2Green advert on a Braintree District Council newsletter and immediately applied. It is great to know there is free support out there for companies like ours and have expert advice on hand! BNOS Meditech have recognised the importance of working more sustainably as an SME within our supply chain demands. Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges that our world faces today. The team have been working on our net zero journey (by 2045) for a couple of years now and we are at the early stages of plans to reduce our carbon footprint by setting both near and long-term goals. 🌍 How easy was it to apply and book your site visit? It was a couple of clicks and some basic information to fill in - the application only took a couple of minutes, and it was easy to set a convenient date and time for MKR to attend our site. 🌍 Did the site visit meet your expectations? Yes - it was great to meet with Mike and discuss the company’s plans to net zero and know that we are on the right pathway. The visit took a couple of hours for Mike to understand the business processes and areas in which we can target carbon reduction. Within a week I had received our first report from MKR on other actions to consider. For any company that is thinking about how to approach their net zero journey and requires support and guidance, I recommend signing up to Lean2Green! Lean2Green is funded by Essex County Council.

  • Have you registered for our Green Business Expo on Thursday 20 June yet? We have a line-up of inspiring speakers who can help you and your business become more sustainable and adapt to the challenges our future holds. We are delighted to share that Milbank Concrete Products Limited will be speaking at the expo. The construction industry is not typically known for its sustainability, but Earls Colne-based Milbank is breaking the mould. Its aim is not only to be “the most sustainable supplier of precast concrete products”, but to provide a positive model for the whole sector. It has made huge strides towards that goal. Carbon output is down 55% since 2018. Milbank has achieved this by attacking the problem from multiple angles: 🌍 All production machinery and yard vehicles have ditched diesel in favour of a fuel called HVO (a renewable hydro-treated vegetable oil biofuel), leading to a huge 90% reduction in greenhouse gas emissions from machinery. Company-wide this knocked 30% off the carbon output. 🌍 Solar panels installed on the factory roof. These now power 50% of manufacturing operations – and save the business money. These are just two examples among many – and, according to Managing Director Lee Cowen, this is just the beginning of Milbank’s journey. He explains: “As a business, our dedication to sustainability is driven by several key imperatives: ensuring the resilience and stability of our business for the well-being of our employees and their families, actively engaging with and supporting our local communities, and, above all, upholding principles of fairness and integrity in everything we do.” Book your place at the Expo now: https://lnkd.in/dPFMQD-M This event has received £5,000 from the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund. #LevellingUp #FundedbyUKGovernment

We're in the process of reviewing our Local Plan, a framework of planning policies acting as a blueprint to guide future development. The first step is the “Call for Sites”, which is an opportunity for landowners, developers and the public to propose sites that could be considered suitable for development. While we anticipate that most of the development needed between now and 2041 is already catered for, we are required to review our Local Plan at least every five years and there may be additional land needed to meet longer-term needs, not just for housing but to create jobs, new infrastructure, open space, healthcare and education. It’s best for us to start planning this now as it is a lengthy process, to ensure our Local Plan is up to date and it remains a robust and sound policy document, making sure sustainable development is properly planned on allocated sites whilst giving us leverage to refuse inappropriate developments on unallocated sites in the strongest possible terms. We're keen for residents, businesses and stakeholders to be involved and share their feedback to help shape the district’s future. The easiest way for people to submit suggested sites and ideas is through our online public consultation portal on our website: https://bit.ly/3JeHwaZ More about the Local Plan Review: https://bit.ly/4asyUd2 #localplan #planning #localgov #localgovernment
