Summer Holiday Club

With a summer holiday abroad on hold for many, our summer holiday club is the perfect solution to ensure your child enjoys an outdoor summer to remember.

Led by our experienced Education Ranger Penny, your child will learn about wetlands wildlife, make natural crafts, use tools, cook on campfires and play.

We're running the club for two weeks in August, you can book per day or for all week!

Our adventurous holiday club is for 7-11 year olds, based at Seaton Wetlands. £35 per child per day, with a 15% discount if you book on for all five days of one week.

Another super-rarity discovered on Seaton Wetlands!

Bechsteins bat

Hot on the heels of one of the rarest mammals in the UK, the grey long eared bat, being recorded at Colyford Common, this charming parcel of the Seaton Wetlands complex turns up another stonking rarity last month!

During a routine check of the bat nest boxes distributed across the site, Adrian Bayley of the Devon Bat Conservation and Research Group, discovered one to be harbouring a very rare Bechstein’s bat, a first for the nature reserve! Being a fully licenced bat ecologist, Adrian was able to fit this little male bat with an identification ring (no more wieldy to the bat than us wearing a wrist watch) and mount a temporary radio transmitter to allow the bat to be tracked accurately over the course of the next few days.

Lesser whitethroat

Lesser Whitethroat

The beginning of the month yielded an exciting find by the Axe Estuary Ringing Group at Seaton Wetlands. A lesser whitethroat was disentangled from a mist net and it’s slender body examined to determine species, age and sex. Upon closer investigation it was clarified to be a juvenile, which means only one thing. These small and secretive warblers have taken a liking for the scrubby habitats at the wetlands and decided to breed here. An exciting first for the site!

Sat Nav Cattle

Sat Nav cattle

To make our conservation grazing as efficient and targeted as it possibly can be, we are adopting a new system to keep the cattle on our reserves without having to erect fences. The new collar system is particularly useful on our registered common at Trinity Hill where any permanent fencing must be authorised by the Secretary of State and go through rigorous public consultation. This system does away with wire fences, using a GPS signal and training the cattle to respond to an audio prompt.
