Use the PNP Method When Giving Your Child Feedback

Your child brings you a draft of a report for school. The first thing you see is a misspelled word. If you start by pointing that out, your child may become immediately discouraged and resistant. Instead, use the PNP method to make it easier for your child to hear your constructive comments.

PNP stands for Positive-Negative-Positive. Start with a positive comment: "You have such an interesting first sentence. It makes me want to read more."

Then add your negative comment followed by a positive statement: "I do see a word you spelled incorrectly. Overall, I think this is a great start."

By offering positive as well as negative feedback, you'll make it more likely that your child will ask you for help again.
