Open Streets Minneapolis 2020 & COVID-19 Planning

Updated June 5, 2020 to reflect the cancellation of Open Streets Franklin planned for July 12th, the cancellation of Open Streets East Lake planned for July 26th, and the cancellation of Open Streets Northeast planned for August 2nd.

Open Streets Minneapolis plans to return for the 10th consecutive year. Our Streets Minneapolis plans to host two Open Streets Minneapolis events in September, with two more events potentially taking place in October.

Open Streets Minneapolis is part of a global movement to make streets places that put people first. During these free, family-friendly events local nonprofit Our Streets Minneapolis partners with the City of Minneapolis to temporarily close major thoroughfares to car traffic, opening them to people biking, walking, rolling, and connecting with neighbors and local businesses.

Open Streets Minneapolis events help us experience streets as public spaces where communities thrive. These events spark transformative changes in how people think about streets.

Open Streets Minneapolis during COVID-19

The COVID-19 pandemic presents an unprecedented challenge to Open Streets Minneapolis
, including not knowing if and when we can gather for large public events. As Our Streets Minneapolis plans the 2020 Open Streets Minneapolis season we are committed to making data-driven decisions about each event using the most up-to-date information available.

Our top priority is the health of our community.

Given the information currently available, Our Streets Minneapolis, the City of Minneapolis, and local partners decided not to host any Open Streets Minneapolis events in June, July, or August 2020.

Open Streets Franklin, Open Streets East Lake, and Open Streets Northeast, the events planned for July and August 2020, are cancelled. While we are sad these events won’t happen this year, we are heartened by our route partners' strong consensus prioritizing community health.

As Our Streets Minneapolis plans events after August 2020 we are working with our partners at the City to make decisions about whether it is safe to host each Open Streets Minneapolis event. We will decide whether to hold each event at least eight weeks ahead of the event date. This timeline gives us the most flexibility to adapt to new information. At that time, we will communicate with our partners and the public through our social media, website, and e-mail newsletter.

In a time of social distancing and economic uncertainty, these events have the potential to be powerful spaces for community healing. We will continue to make the best decisions we can to increase the chances Open Streets can happen without compromising the health of our community.
