Chinese apps

Question for written answer E-004941/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Peter Lundgren (ECR)

India recently banned a number of Chinese apps, including the well-known app ‘Tiktok’.

India’s justification is that ‘the apps are stealing and surreptitiously transmitting users’ data in an unauthorised manner to servers which have locations outside India. The compilation of these data, its mining and profiling by elements hostile to national security and defence of India, which ultimately impinges upon the sovereignty and integrity of India, is a matter of very deep and immediate concern which requires emergency measures.’

There has also been discussion in the US and Australia as to whether to ban Chinese apps for security reasons.

What are the Commission’s views on a ban on Chinese apps within the EU?
