On 23 March 2021, the Committee on Women's Rights and Gender Equality (FEMM), in association with the Committee on Development (DEVE), organized the side event on "Enhancing gender equality and women's empowerment in the Covid-19 recovery”. The side event took place between 17.00 – 18.45 CET (12.00 – 13.45 EST).

The side event presented priorities and initiatives of the European Parliament as regards gender equality and the empowerment of women in crises such as the one triggered by COVID-19. It also provided a forum to exchange good practices and discuss innovative approaches and possible ways forward.

The event was opened by FEMM Chair Evelyn Regner (S&D, AT) and by Development Committee Vice-Chair Pierrette Herzberger-Fofana (Greens/EFA, DE), followed by a keynote speech by Leonore Gewessler, Austrian Minister for climate action, environment, energy, mobility, innovation and technology.

The panel discussion included FEMM MEPs Maria Manuel Leitão Marques (S&D, PT) and Samira Rafaela (Renew Europe, NL), before an exchange of views with delegates and MEPs. Evelyn Regner delivered the closing speech.
