Many thanks to all of our esteemed panelists who joined us for our World Day Against Child Labor event, delving into the critical connection between child labor and climate change. With over half a billion children residing in flood-prone regions and more than 150 million in drought-stricken areas, we cannot overstate the urgency of addressing this issue. If you missed the event, we invite you to watch the recording: https://lnkd.in/eabmft5R Here are a few highlights: “We can very easily see the socioeconomic impacts that climate change brings to people's lives. Many family members are forced to choose between sending their kids to school and sending them to work to sustain basic needs at home.” - Amber Barth, Director of the International Labour Organization Office for the U.S. and Canada “If companies are forced to be more transparent, we can possibly strike a balance between working practices and profit. Ultimately, child labor is bad for business.” - Eleanor Harry, Founder and CEO of HACE: Data Changing Child Labour “There is a very direct link between climate change and child labor. We need to provide economic support to families so they can find an alternate way of getting income.” - Yug Raj Pandey, Economic Counselor, Embassy of Nepal, Washington D.C. “True social dialogue is critical to address the economic drivers of child labor and advance policies that protect the rights of working people.” -Sonia Mistry, Solidarity Center, Climate and Labor Justice Director “Governments investing in green jobs and renewable energy need to build in worker consultation at every stage and uphold worker rights. This includes protecting children and workers with strong laws, enforcement, and investment in education and robust social protection systems.” - Thea Lee, Deputy Undersecretary for International Affairs “We know that when parents and caregivers have decent work, they're unlikely to rely on children to put food on the table... It is urgent that we collectively renew our commitment and dedicate the necessary resources to address child labor.” - Marcia Eugenio, Director of Child Labor, Forced Labor and Human Trafficking

We were excited to see U.S. Department of Labor funded project, “Improving Workers’ Occupational Safety and Health in Selected Supply Chains in Mexico” highlighted during the International Labor Conference. The International Labour Organization provided ILC participants the opportunity via virtual reality to show how the project is supporting workers in Mexico’s agricultural sector. https://lnkd.in/dsvEnszU #GlobalHeatSafety #HeatStress #ILC2024

Imagine a rice farmer and her child in Nepal. Imagine their land going uncultivated as floods, monsoons, landslides and a rapidly changing ecosystem devastate their crop. That farmer and her child might have to start migrating seasonally near the brick kilns, where it is estimated some 34,000 children now live. More than half of those children work in the kilns, sacrificing their childhoods and risking their safety to help their families survive. This is a small snapshot of what’s happening all over the world. In fact, over half a billion children dwell in areas with extremely high levels of floods and over 150 million children live in high drought severity areas. In either case, families are often forced to take lower-paying jobs to make ends meet in which employers exploit their desperation. We are thrilled to announce the winners of this year’s #IqbalMasihAward for the Elimination of Child Labor: the Egyptian civil society organization Wadi El Nil Association and Ghanaian trade union leader Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe. For over two decades, Wadi El Nil Association has been a transformative force in Egypt, working tirelessly to combat child labor in the limestone mining sector. Andrews Addoquaye Tagoe, Deputy General Secretary of the General Agricultural Workers Union of the Ghana Trade Union Congress, is a pivotal figure in advancing child and workers' rights in Ghana. Both winners have not only protected children from hazardous work but have also created economic opportunities for families, helping to break the cycle of child labor. Today, on International Day for the Fight against Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated (IUU) Fishing, we reflect that these practices often create conditions in which the labor rights of fishers are not protected. ILAB remains committed to addressing exploitation on the high seas, including forced labor, as well as ensuring that fishers have a voice and can organize and collectively bargain for better wages and working conditions.
