IMF hosts Capacity Development Dialogue with Partners

Following a previous iteration at the 2021 Spring Meetings of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the IMF convened a High-Level Capacity Development Dialogue at the closing of the 2021 Annual Meetings.

Chaired by IMF Deputy Managing Director Antoinette M. Sayeh and also featuring Vitor Gaspar and Rhoda Weeks-Brown - respectively Director of the Fiscal Affairs Department and IMF General Counsel and Director of the Legal Department -, this Dialogue led to a strategic discussion between the IMF and about twenty of its development partners on strengthening economic foundations for a sustainable recovery.

The Dialogue focused specifically on how to regain momentum towards the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), foster an inclusive recovery, strengthen resilience, and build a sustainable foundation for long-term growth.

IMF partners support more than half of IMF Capacity Development work and help us mitigate the economic impact of the pandemic on our member countries.

Deputy Managing Director Antoinette M. Sayeh stressed the importance of global partnerships to finance urgent capacity development activities amidst COVID-19, including through the IMF's COVID-19 Crisis Capacity Development Initiative. Those activities mostly focused on the following areas: public financial management, domestic revenue mobilization, financial sector development, economic forecasting and statistics, governance, and financial integrity.

Rhoda Weeks-Brown, meanwhile, explained the importance of supporting legal frameworks and institution-building that promote macroeconomic stability and sustainable development.

IMF partners shared their perspectives on how capacity development can most efficiently support SDGs and address major challenges such as climate change and digitalization.
