Labor Secretary Marty Walsh expressed confidence Monday ahead of a critical holiday shipping season, despite a supply chain crisis that could partially cripple the arrival of packages.
"The president has made it clear – he's talked with different stores and box stores and they've said their shelves are stocked and they feel good about heading into the Christmas season," Walsh said in an interview with WISN 12.
Walsh was traveling to the Port of Los Angeles Monday evening to see the crisis first-hand.
"Collectively we'll be dealing with higher prices and delayed orders," Dr. Marko Bastl, director of Marquette University's Center for Supply Chain Management, said Sunday on UPFRONT. "We have to move the product and workers are still getting ill, we have a shortage of drivers."
A group of House lawmakers, including Wisconsin Congressman Glenn Grothman and Ron Kind, have signed onto a letter requesting Walsh expedite a federal program that recruits and trains truck drivers.
"We're working on that right now," Walsh said. "I had a meeting earlier today in my office – funny you ask me the question – and we're talking about putting together programming to ramp it up."
Monday afternoon President Joe Biden met with several retail CEOs to discuss the holiday shopping season and ways to ensure packages arrive in time.
