Overview

West Sussex County Council has been running the current Short Breaks programme since 2016. We will be launching a new Short Breaks programme in April 2023 and want to hear your views and ideas to help us plan the new programme.

Short Breaks services enable a child to try new experiences, both with and away from their siblings and parents or carers, giving them the opportunity to learn new skills, develop their confidence and have fun! Parents and carers also get a break from their caring role (respite).

Short Breaks are available for children and young people, from 0-18 years with some services going up to 25 years, who live in West Sussex and have a disability and/or additional need. Families who are in receipt of either the middle or high care component of the Disability Living Allowance (DLA) or Personal Independence Payments (PIP) for their disabled child or young person qualify for services automatically.

Currently organisations who provide Short Breaks across West Sussex include Kangaroos, Guildcare (Ashdown), Extratime, Springboard, Albion in the Community, Head2Head Theatre, Aspens, YMCA, Challengers, PACSO, Angling4Education, Chestnut Tree House, Lodge Hill and the National Autistic Society.
