NOT-CA-20-091 - Notice of Intent to Publish a Funding Opportunity Announcement for Coordinating Center for New Cohorts to Assess Environmental Exposures and Cancer Risk (U24 Clinical Trial Not Allowed)

Issued by

National Cancer Institute (NCI)

Purpose

The National Cancer Institute (NCI) intends to promote a new initiative by publishing a Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOA) to solicit applications for innovative scientific research to address knowledge gaps between environmental exposures and cancer etiology across diverse populations using new prospective cohort studies, which will be facilitated by a Coordinating Center that is expected to be awarded under a separate RFA (see the parallel notice of intent to publish announcement NOT-CA-20-091). The Cohorts for Environmental Exposures and Cancer Risk (CEECR) will provide scientific evidence related to environmental exposures and cancer risk. The CEECR will be supported through UG3/UH3 phased awards.

Approximately five new prospective cohorts are expected to be awarded. Applicants are encouraged to be innovative in their assessments of exposure as well as in study design. Techniques employed should be accurate, reproducible, and relevant to the proposed scientific aims. This initiative calls for research questions that can be addressed in both the short-term and longer-term with an observational study design.

This Notice is being provided to allow potential applicants time to develop responsive projects and meaningful collaborations.

The FOAs are expected to use the UG3/UH3 mechanism for CEECR (Clinical Trials Not Allowed).

The FOA is expected to be published in November 2020 with an expected application due date in January 2021.

Details of the planned FOAs are provided below.

Research Initiative Details

This Notice encourages investigators with expertise and insights into this area of environmental exposures and cancer risk to begin to consider applying for this new FOA.

In addition, collaborative investigations combining expertise in environmental epidemiology including environmental health science, exposure assessment tools and methods, cancer epidemiology, toxicology, molecular epidemiology, statistics, and community engagement will be encouraged, and these teams of investigators should also begin considering applying for this FOA.

Among the areas of research encouraged in this initiative are epidemiologic research examining the impact of environmental exposures on markers of carcinogenesis and cancer risk, as well as research designed to improve the translation of existing knowledge of strategies for the prevention of cancer.

This Funding Opportunity Announcement (FOAs) solicits applications for:

  • Prospective observational research studies to address environmental exposures and cancer risk (UG3/UH3).

The new cohorts for environmental exposures and cancer risk (CEECR) (UG3/UH3 phased awards) will be supported by a Coordinating Center (U24; NOT-CA-20-091).
