According to the National Interagency Fire Center, more than 56,000 wildfires burned 2.6 million acres last year, destroying more than 4,300 homes and commercial structures across the United States. This includes the catastrophic Lahaina wildfire on Maui, with nearly 100 lives lost, more than 2,100 acres burned and 2,300 residences destroyed. Through its Rapid Response to Extreme Weather Events program, NIFA is supporting five projects in the region that will strengthen local community capacity, build resilience and deepen cultural connections. https://lnkd.in/eD5tW_gB

Dr. Hongda Chen is National Program Leader for bioprocess engineering and nanotechnology at the USDA National Institute of Food and Agriculture. Over more than two decades of dedicated service, he has led a national portfolio of food science, engineering and technology in research, education and Extension in advancing food manufacturing technologies for safe, nutritious and value-added products. #AANHPI

Join NIFA for the Tribal Research Partnerships: Indigenous Agroforestry, Food Security and Sovereignty webinar which highlights opportunities and challenges of transdisciplinary approaches within tribal agroforestry and food security research. The panel will include a diversity of tribal, academic, non-governmental organization and USDA transdisciplinary research approaches, how and in what ways this research is serving tribal communities and overcoming challenges. 

Battling unexpected weather conditions, farm equipment repairs and excessive workloads are just a few stress factors experienced by farmers and ranchers in the U.S. NIFA's Farm and Ranch Stress Assistance Network Program supports community-based outreach education to improve mental health outcomes for individual and families in rural communities. https://lnkd.in/erJmy62t

With funding from NIFA, Cambria Veterinary Care in Johnstown, Penn., now can better serve its large animal clients. The veterinary clinic leveraged a NIFA Veterinary Services Grant to purchase much-needed equipment that will be used in the field and in the clinic’s new haul-in facility. ▶️ https://lnkd.in/gAufYAaY
