DOE Federal Energy Management Program - FEMP

This course helps engage building operators/managers and students to reduce operating costs and provide energy savings to the buildings they are responsible for or will be responsible for in the future. The knowledge and skills learned here will be highly valued in the energy, controls, HVAC, and renewable industries.

Throughout this course, students will learn the initial steps involved in re-tuning a building with a building automation systems (BAS). Interactive exercises are included to provide "hands-on" practice with the re-tuning process within a virtual building. Participants will practice identifying opportunities for energy improvements while deciding how to re-tune for more efficiency. In some examples, trend graphs will be utilized from the BAS to help learners understand how the data can aid in identifying potential opportunities for improvement. If your building does not employ BAS, see the Re-tuning Training for Buildings Without Building Automation Systems course.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this training, attendees will be able to:

  • Identify the initial steps involved in Re-tuning a building controlled by a BAS;
  • Define how to assess buildings' energy needs;
  • Recognize how to identify opportunities for improvement;
  • Identify how to implement low-cost changes to reduce overall energy consumption; and
  • Engage in interactive exercises that are included to provide "hands-on" practice of the re-tuning process within a virtual building by identifying opportunities for energy improvement and determining how to re-tune for more efficiency.
