Sale of German submarines to Turkey
13.2.2021
Question for written answer E-000900/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)
The imposition of sanctions on the Erdogan regime is an extremely thorny issue, given its blatant disregard for warnings from the EU, which is constantly backing down at the last minute and giving Turkey another chance, despite its intransigence.
For warnings to be effective and be taken seriously by Turkey, a degree of credibility is required of the Member States, reflecting constancy of purpose on the part of the EU.
In view of this, and given the lack of EU common ground with Turkey regarding measures to protect and uphold human rights and freedoms, the migration issue, compliance with international law and respect for EEZs, Germany’s decision to supply that country with state-of-the-art naval submarines is all the more regrettable.
In view of this:
- 1.Does the Commission consider that the EU is really displaying any degree of credibility in the light of moves by Germany to sell directly to Turkey military equipment that can be used against its Member States?
- 2.What view does the Commission take of the sale of such equipment to Turkey, a country that is occupying EU territory on Cyprus, my home country?
