Each year in the United States there are nearly 7 million people in the criminal legal system, including more than 2 million people who are incarcerated at any given time. Due to the criminalization of substance use in the United States, people with substance use challenges are more likely to be arrested and incarcerated, leading to significantly increased health, social, and economic risks. For example, in Washington, people released from prison were 129 times more likely to die of an opioid overdose within two weeks from release compared to the general public. While evidence-based treatment and services for people with substance use challenges exist, they are underutilized, especially within criminal justice settings. This webinar will provide an overview of the ways in which the criminal legal system impacts people with substance challenges, describe best and promising practices from the field to better support people who are at risk of criminal legal system involvement, and offer resources and tools to support practice and policy implementation.
