Lawmakers are creating a PSA to heighten awareness of the already in place Public Service Loan Program.
The program is federally funded and forgives the remainder of a borrower's student loans after 10 years of public service work.
According to lawmakers, all government and 501(c)3 non-profit employees are eligible after 10 years of service, and the program comes at no cost to employers.
Across the state of California, nearly a million people are eligible for federal student loan relief and only 10,000 have been reimbursed, according to lawmakers.
The program is so underutilized that California Attorney General Rob Bonta and other leaders are launching a new awareness campaign called the "California Student Debt Challenge" to bring awareness to both employees and employers.
The ‘challenge’ launches on Monday, August 8, and lawmakers are calling upon both government and nonprofits to join it while highlighting diversity across the state.
The Campaign for California Borrower’s Rights built a website to help both employees and employers navigate the system to ensure those eligible can receive reimbursement. Learn more here.
