LACEY, WA (MyBellinghamNow.com) – A new limit on toxic chemicals could lead to cleaner water around the state’s rivers and streams.

The state Department of Ecology is proposing a major update to Washington’s aquatic life toxics criteria. The criteria exist to set limits for toxic chemicals in marine and fresh water to protect aquatic life from dying or suffering long-term changes in growth and reproduction.

Washington currently has limits for 28 toxic chemicals – including arsenic, copper, nickel, silver and zinc. The Dept. of Ecology is seeking to update the criteria for 16 of those chemicals and add 14 more chemicals to the list.

The last update to the state’s aquatic life toxics criteria was 30 years ago. The department’s proposal is based on updated science and new research, as well as recommendations from the EPA and tribal governments.

The Dept. of Ecology is taking public comments on the rule change through April 17. Those interested can submit feedback through the Washington Dept. of Ecology’s survey.
