Twitter is the only significant social media platform not to have banned the Taliban, with senior members of the organisation boasting more than a million followers between them.

Unlike Facebook and YouTube, Twitter said that it would not bar Taliban members unless they were found to be glorifying or promoting violence or expressing hate against a person or group.

The result is that the Taliban has been able to widen its messaging. The account of Zabihullah Mujahid, main spokesman for the group, has expanded to more than 321,000 followers in the past few days.
