You can navigate between different chapters by using the Course Menu at the top right of the screen.

Selecting a link brings up additional information in any of the following forms:

  • Simulated Dialog Box: The Simulated Dialog Box contains additional, testable material directly related to the linked word(s). When you have finished reading the content, select the Close button located at the top right of the Simulated Dialog Box.
  • Documents: Linked documents and tables contain testable material.
  • New Screens: Sometimes content amount exceeds a single screen’s real estate and must branch onto additional screens. In these cases, links are used to direct the user to additional screens within the course.
  • Web Sites: Links can also lead to Web sites outside the course. These Web sites contain useful and/or interesting information relevant to the topic. Content from outside Web sites is not testable material unless it is also found directly in the course content area.

This course encompasses a variety of different activities.

  • Image Interactivity: Some images act as links and can be selected to bring up additional screens and information. There are times when an image must be selected before navigation becomes active and you are permitted to continue.
  • Tab Interactivity: Some controls like tab panels, toggle lists and carousels behave as tabbed content. Use the left and right arrow keys or up and down arrow keys to navigate between tabs. Pressing the Home or End key goes to the first or last tab in the list. When a tab is selected, use the Tab key to navigate the content of the active tab panel. Use Shift-Tab to go back to the tabs to navigate to another tab, or press Tab to leave the tab control.

You can exit the course at any time by closing the browser window.

Technical Requirements — What are the hardware requirements?

  • A laptop or desktop computer
  • This training can be viewed on a mobile device. However, animated exercises may not display correctly on all mobile devices.
  • Speakers are recommended,
  • Headphones are optional.

What are the software requirements?

  • Web Browsers:
    • Window Users - Chrome, Microsoft Edge
    • Apple Users – Safari
  • Plug-ins:
    • JAWS screen reader

What are the required computer settings?

  • Monitor:
    • The minimum screen resolution is 1024 x 768. Using a lower resolution may result in display issues.
  • Browser Settings:
    • Enable JavaScript - required for the course to run properly.
    • Enable Cookies to save information, as well as your progress in the course.
    • Delete Browser Cookies - when you have completed the course or when using a public computer.
    • Disable Pop-up blocker - to present additional course information pop-ups are used throughout the course.

Is the course accessible?

  • Transcripts and closed captioning are available
  • Audio description is available

Is the training available in Spanish?

  • Not at this time.

I'm having trouble reading the text on the site. Can I make the text larger?

To increase the text size on your Internet browser, follow these steps:

  • Internet Explorer:
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. On the View menu, click Text Size, then select Largest
  • Internet Explorer for Mac:
    1. Open Internet Explorer
    2. On the View menu, select Text Zoom, then click the zoom level you would prefer
  • Firefox:
    1. Open Firefox
    2. On the View menu, click Text Size, then select Increase
  • Safari:
    1. Open Safari
    2. On the View menu, click Make Text Bigger
  • AOL Browser:
    1. Open the AOL browser
    2. On the Safety menu, click Settings (you can also click the Settings button on the standard toolbar)
    3. Under the letter F, click Font and Text
    4. In the Text Settings area, click Largest, or select a custom text size from the Font Settings pull-down
    5. Click Save

Do I have to complete the whole course in one sitting?

  • Enable Cookies to save information, as well as your progress in the course. If you are on a public computer, don’t forget to Delete Browser Cookies.

Is the course secure?

  • The .gov means it’s official. Federal government websites always use a .gov or .mil domain. Before sharing sensitive information online, make sure you’re on a .gov or .mil site by inspecting your browser’s address (or "location") bar.

Does this training record any of my personal information?

  • No, there is no record of who took this training.

Why do I need to take this training?

  • As the VA Secretary said, "Every VA patient, their families and caregivers, as well as sexual assault survivors, staff, visitors and advocates should feel safe in all VA facilities." At the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA) we are committed to maintaining a safe, respectful and welcoming environment in every VA facility, office and medical center.

    "Bystander Intervention Training for Veterans," is an opportunity for you to contribute to a healthy and safe environment where everyone is treated with dignity and respect. The training will give you the tools and techniques you need if you witness sexual harassment or assault, as well as enable you to feel confident in your ability to recognize a hostile situation and know what to do or say to prevent it from getting worse or to get help.

I am a Caregiver/Spouse/family member. Will this training still be helpful?

  • Yes, we all need to do what we can to stop harassment.

What does the course cost?

  • The training is free and confidential, with no registration required. You do not have to log in or share any personal information. Simply click the "Start the Course" on the homepage to get started.
