The Portland Police Association has moved out of its North Lombard office and plans to sell it after it became a focal point of demonstrations and the target of vandalism and fires in the past year.
Daryl Turner, who recently retired as a Portland police officer and is now serving as the union’s executive director, wouldn’t divulge where the union office has relocated, citing safety concerns.
Turner said the move is to avoid further disruption to the North Portland neighborhood.
The union had moved into the building at 1868 N. Lombard St. in February 2015 after leaving its prior home on Northwest Overton Street.
The boarded-up union office was vandalized during multiple protests, with fires set to the front and rear doors. On one night, a neighbor was seen trying to put out a blaze with a garden hose.
“The Lombard building will be repaired, and, at a later date, put on the market to sell,” Turner wrote in a Facebook post Tuesday night.
Turner, in the post, thanked the businesses and residents around the Lombard Street site.
“We appreciate their support and patience over the last year. We thank them for their tolerance,” he wrote. “And we hope that with our relocation, they can have some peace.”
