We're celebrating the career and retirement of Dr. Charles "Stormy" Mayo from the Center for Coastal Studies (Provincetown, MA), where he served as senior scientist and the director of their North Atlantic Right Whale Ecology Program. Stormy has dedicated more than four decades of his life and career to conserving and studying marine species, especially North Atlantic right whales: https://bit.ly/4dykUjV We thank Dr. Mayo for the way he courageously pioneered large whale disentanglement techniques, participated in numerous disentanglement efforts, brainstormed improvements with colleagues, and dedicated his life’s work to learning all he could and advocating for these amazing giants. Celebrating big wins for our finned friends! A monumental initiative by the Trout Unlimited North Coast Coho Project is making waves rescuing California’s southernmost coho salmon. This unique run of coho salmon, at the southern extent of the species' range, has teetered on the brink of extinction, making it one of our Species in the Spotlight. Janet Coit, NOAA Fisheries Assistant Administrator, presented the Partnership in the Spotlight Award to Trout Unlimited for their amazing work partnering with timber companies, grape growers, private landowners and state and federal agencies to restore habitat for endangered coho salmon. It's the largest such initiative in California. The tide is turning—let's continue to swim together for a stronger future! Credit: Katja Bresch #ConservationWin #SaveTheSalmon

Did you know today is #WorldTunaDay? Yeah, this guy was a little surprised, too. May 2 was named World Tuna Day by the United Nations to highlight the global importance of sustainably managing tuna fishing stocks in the world’s oceans. Celebrate by learning some fun facts about tunas—like the fact that they never stop swimming in order to "breathe"—and how we help sustainably manage them: https://bit.ly/3G7y2wR Credit: iStock #SustainableFisheries

Seven years after Hurricane Maria devastated Puerto Rico, the island’s forests, wetlands, and coral reefs still bear scars from the storm. Thanks to $1.3 million in funding from our Office of Habitat Conservation, BoriCorps is working to restore the island’s environmental and cultural assets in hard-hit local communities. Through this project, young Puerto Ricans will gain paid work experience and training while they support their communities. They will work with partners to restore two heavily damaged habitats in Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve—mangrove forests and seagrass beds. Read more about the partnership that is furthering young careers while restoring vital habitat in Puerto Rico: https://bit.ly/3Q1boLM Image Credits: Jobos Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve; BoriCorps #HabitatRestoration #EarthWeekNOAA
