Outbreak of equine herpes
2.3.2021
Priority question for written answer P-001223/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Hilde Vautmans (Renew)
Following an outbreak of a very aggressive neurological strain of equine herpes (EHV-1) at the CES Valencia Spring Tour, all international events scheduled to take place in 10 European countries have been cancelled with immediate effect. A number of horses displayed symptoms of disease and some have since died. As many of the animals at the event were transported back home, the virus is likely to have spread to other Member States.
Not only the FEI, but also various national equestrian federations and official bodies are taking measures to prevent the further spread of EHV-1 among horses.
- 1.Is the Commission aware of this worrying outbreak and will it launch an investigation into the causes thereof?
- 2.What measures has it already taken and what measures will it take to combat any further outbreak of the virus? Could an EU Veterinary Emergency Team be deployed, as was done under similar circumstances in response to the outbreak of African swine fever?
- 3.How will the Commission assist Member States to combat the virus what support will it provide for the equestrian sector?
