Michigan’s Boat and Beach Report: Only a couple of watch-outs for this weekend

It’s going to be a great weekend to hit the beach. If you want to get out on a boat, you should have pretty good weather too. I’ve identified two weather conditions you will want to watch for this weekend.

Water temperatures at Lake Michigan and Lake Huron beaches are warming up. Michigan’s beaches at the far southern end of Lake Michigan now have water temperatures in the mid-70s. That’s getting warm enough to almost enjoy staying in the water under hot sunshine. But the water temperatures could change dramatically this weekend.

That’s my first watch-out for you. A northeast wind will develop Friday and continue into Saturday. The northeast wind will push the warmer water out into the middle of Lake Michigan and bring colder water to the beach shoreline. You can use the Seagull.glos.org site to see the forecast in a hyperlocal manner for the beach of your choice. The northeast wind at Lake Huron beaches does just the opposite. It piles the warmer water near the Michigan shoreline. You might find some decent water temperatures at the beaches of the eastern Thumb, and maybe even Tawas and the northeast shoreline.

Here are the current water temperatures on Lakes Michigan and Huron.

The beach at Caseville has some warm water. The beach water from Grand Haven southward is in the 70s.

Sunshine is going to be the rule for the weekend. Head to our great Michigan beaches.

If you are going to take the boat out, or better yet- ride in your friend’s boat, the winds will be fairly light this weekend. The second watch-out though is the northeast wind makes bigger waves on Saginaw Bay. There are a lot of boats on Saginaw Bay. While the northeast wind won’t be strong, it often gets a little stronger than the average forecasts show. The rest of the lower Great Lakes and the inland lakes shouldn’t have big waves.

Here are the wave expectations Saturday and Sunday on Lakes Michigan and Huron.

Michigan’s nearshore waters of Lake Michigan should have waves less than two feet.
