Dominican Republic Highway Construction

The Dominican Government announced a plan to initiate the construction of a new highway from Santiago to Puerto Plata with an international design and total of 42 kilometers, four lanes, and would include a tunnel and a bridge. The highway would be granted as a concession for construction and operation.

Puerto Plata is the second largest tourist destination in the country, with several hotels and resort complexes, as well as a Carnival Cruise Terminal. The province has an active international airport and a commercial port. The proposed plan would reduce the commute between the two cities, and to the country’s capital, Santo Domingo, facilitating greater ease of travel for tourists, commercial cargo and passenger transportation. The budget for the project is estimated to be $465 million.

The Ministry of Public Works, in charge of the planning and coordination of the project, indicated that the DR government is looking for a Public/Private alliance for the construction and operation of the highway. This contract would also include the tolls required. The international public tender is expected to be out by fall 2019.
