Safety of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant following recent explosions
13.2.2021
Question for written answer E-000901/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)
The Turkish media have reported damage to homes following two successive explosions at the Turkish nuclear power plant construction site on 19 January.
This has raised serious questions as to the safety of residents of the wider surrounding area, including Cyprus, given that the site of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant is located a mere 64 kilometres from its coast.
In view of this:
- 1.Can the Commission say what action it is taking to ensure the safety of the residents of the surrounding area, including Cyprus?
- 2.Can it share the latest findings, if available, of technical project safety meetings held to date?
- 3.To what extent has Turkey, a candidate country, brought its legislation into line with the EU acquis in the field of safety?
