We still have nice warm water on the surface of Lake Michigan, just not everywhere. The northeast wind this weekend has really chilled off the water at some of the hottest Michigan beaches.
Michigan’s south end beaches on Lake Michigan have been the most affected by warm water being pushed out into the lake, and cold water brought up to the surface.
Let’s work our way southward from Port Sheldon, MI to Michigan City, IN. One thing you will notice is how quickly the water can also warm back up.
At Port Sheldon this weekend the water temperature dropped over 20 degrees, bottoming at 54 degrees. As of this morning the water temperature has rebounded back to around 70 degrees.
South Haven’s water temperature has plunged about 26 degrees and is still a cold 50 degrees as of this morning.
The water at the beach at Bridgman dropped 25 degrees, and has now bounced back to almost 65 degrees.
Michigan City, IN had almost 80 degree water last week, before plunging to 68 degrees this weekend. Now the water temperatures are on the way back up.
While the water temperatures will bounce around some, the general forecast is for upwelling to continue on the southern Lake Michigan coast on the Michigan side.
We are going to have some nice beach weather this week, but you will want to go to seagull.glos.org and see what the water temperatures are just before you go to the beach.
