No Kid Hungry Summer Meals Eligibility Maps

The map below provides important information about geographic eligibility for summer meal programs.

No Kid Hungry Non-Congregate Summer Meals Rural Eligibility Map

The No Kid Hungry Non-Congregate Summer Meals Rural Eligibility Map will show you if your area meets USDA’s definition of rural for the purpose of qualifying to provide non-congregate summer meals in FY2025. To view this map:

  1. In the menu on the left side of the screen, click the "Layers" button.

  2. Hover over the "NKH SFSP Averaged Eligibility 2025" layer and click the eye icon. This will hide the SFSP eligibility map layer so that only the rural eligibility layer is displayed.

The definition of "rural" was updated in the interim final rule issued on December 29, 2023. The definition of "rural" was expanded to include numerous geographies in USDA or U.S. Census data sources. This single layer represents all geographies designated as "rural" except for any areas with rural designations made by the Secretary of the USDA or state agencies in consultation with FNS Regional Offices, as per the interim final rule. This map is sourced from USDA’s Rural Designation map.

Any area shaded in green represents a rural area. This is reflected in the legend:

Per the December 2023 interim final rule, the following areas are considered rural (click links to learn more):

To get more information about a specific location, navigate to the area on the map or enter a local address in the search bar. Click anywhere on the subdivision of the map that your site is located in to pull up a pop-up that shows you relevant data about the area. If your site is located in a green area, the pop-up will be titled “This area is designated as Rural” and display an “Object ID.” The object ID corresponds to the area as it is labeled in USDA’s Rural Designation map.

No Kid Hungry Averaged Eligibility Map

The No Kid Hungry Averaged Eligibility Map will show you if your summer meal site or day care home is located in an area eligible location based on the USDA Food and Nutrition Service’s averaging policy.

To get started, type the address of your day care home or summer meal site into the search bar at the top of the map. Look at the color (orange, blue or gray) of the Census Block Group (CBG) that your address is located in on the map.

Addresses located in the orange CBGs meet the 50 percent free and reduced-price eligibility requirement and are area eligible. Addresses located in blue CBGs are area eligible through the use of averaging and with State agency and FNS Regional Office approval.

To view data on the CBG in which your day care home or summer meal site is located, click on the map near the address (within the same color area) and a new popup window will appear. The popup window contains data pertinent to the area eligibility determination as well as information about the USDA urban/rural and potential rural pocket designations explained above. The data available in the popup window will not appear in the search result box with the address. You may need to zoom out to view data on surrounding CBGs.

Please note if this map is turned on along with the rural map layers described above that you may need to scroll through multiple pages of information to see this information. You can toggle between these pages by clicking on the arrow at the top of the popup.

The user’s guide will help you interpret the map and show you how to use the data provided in the map to submit a request to your state agency to get your site formally designated as area eligible.
