Michigan’s Boat and Beach weather: Finding sand and water a must this weekend

Here’s a look at why you should get out on what Michigan is known for: beaches and lakes. Water temperatures have warmed, and winds won’t be too strong this weekend.

Lake Michigan has really warmed up, and will continue to warm today and Saturday with temperatures in the 90s and strong sunshine. You can scroll and click on the map below to see current surface water temperatures from seagull.glos.org

The beach water on southern Lake Michigan beaches is approaching 80 degrees, which will feel really nice during Saturday’s 90-degree weather, and even on Sunday’s 85-degree weather.

Frankfort’s beach water is getting close to 70 degrees and should continue to warm today and Saturday on southwest winds. A peek into Grand Traverse Bay shows still-chilly water with temperatures in the 60s.

Caseville’s water temperature is around 80 degrees. Tawas and Port Huron have some upwelling of colder water, which is expected after a few days of southwest winds. The water at those areas is around 70 degrees.

It should be a good-to-great weekend to get out on the boat. Thunderstorms are expected Saturday night and Sunday morning. The daylight hours of Saturday should be storm-free. Sunday should have thunderstorms diminishing in the morning. We are at the peak of summer afternoon instability, so always keep your eyes to the sky when on the water. This is in case an isolated thunderstorm develops.

Both weekend days will have a southwest wind between 10 mph and 20 mph. This makes okay waves on Saginaw Bay and higher waves on Michigan’s Lake Michigan waters.

Your favorite inland lake will be okay if a steady southwest wind doesn’t make your side of the lake too rough.

It’s a great weekend to head to Michigan’s beaches, and a great weekend for some Michigan water spots.
