Wind farm

Wind turbines rotate in Kittitas County, Wash.

Wind and solar power plants will raise property taxes on homeowners in some Eastern Washington counties, a burden that will get heavier unless legislators act, according to the Washington State Association of Counties.

Property taxes from newly built energy installations enlarge local government budgets, but wind turbines and solar panels — unlike homes — depreciate in assessed value each year, regardless of the operator’s profits.
