Hoosier Student Holocaust Remembrance Artistic Expressions Competition

Hoosier Student Holocaust Remembrance Artistic Expressions Competition

The 23rd Annual State of Indiana Holocaust Remembrance Program will take place on Tuesday, November 9, 2021 from 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM at the Indiana Statehouse.

November 9 is the anniversary of Kristallnacht, the Night of Broken Glass. During this day in 1938, Nazis in Germany torched synagogues, vandalized Jewish homes, schools and businesses and killed close to 100 Jews.

This year, we are inviting middle and high school students from across the state of Indiana to submit an original piece of art or writing to be considered for inclusion in the 2021 State of Indiana Holocaust Remembrance program booklet and marketing materials.

Students creating a piece of artwork should be made aware that certain images associated with the Holocaust, such as Nazi symbols, barbed wire, and images from the death camps, carry potent and brutal racist connotations. Students are advised to use such images judiciously and thoughtfully, if at all, in their compositions.

Students can consider the following quote from Holocaust survivor, Elie Wiesel, as a prompt to inspire their artistic creation: “Wherever men and women are persecuted because of their race, religion, or political views, that place must - at that moment - become the center of the universe.”
