NEAH BAY – The Makah Tribe at Neah Bay will get another infusion of federal money to support an ocean data and mapping program.

Another 289-thousand dollars is coming to the tribe, bringing a total of half a million dollars to the tribe for the project.

The Makah plans to execute regional ocean planning initiatives by increasing their mapping capabilities and allowing an ocean mapping specialist to continue providing data and mapping support. Ultimately, the tribe hopes to use the initiative to better protect their coastal areas and culture in the face of climate change.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration announced about $754,000 in this round of funding to support three federally recognized tribes’ participation in regional ocean partnerships as part of President Biden’s Investing in America agenda. These funds will support activities on the East and West Coasts to manage ocean and coastal resources.
