This week, U.S. National Science Foundation Director Sethuraman Panchanathan traveled to Indiana, alongside Sen. Todd Young (R-Ind.), to visit Purdue University, University of Notre Dame and Indiana University Bloomington (IU). The director attended a dinner hosted by IU's leadership, during which he emphasized the NSF's commitment to Indiana's research and development ecosystem. In Fiscal Year 2022, NSF investments in the state exceeded $165 million, empowering Americans through education and fostering innovation and economic growth across the Midwest and beyond. Director Panchanathan participated in the ribbon-cutting ceremony marking the completion of Purdue University's new Birck Nanotechnology Center research facility, where the next-generation semiconductor and nanotechnology workforce are developing the skills for tomorrow. Following the ribbon-cutting ceremony, Director Panchanathan and Young participated in a fireside chat during the "Presidential Lecture" series, moderated by Purdue President Mung Chiang. After the lecture, the director spoke with NATO Secretary General Genoa. The director concluded his trip at University of Notre Dame, where he engaged with NSF Faculty Early Career Development Program and Graduate Research Fellowship Program awardees and visited the NSF Spectrum Innovation Center SpectrumX. Fueled by a 5-year, $25 million NSF investment, SpectrumX – An NSF Spectrum Innovation Center is a coalition of 29 institutions led by Notre Dame, whose goal is to address the growing demand for radio spectrum usage.
