Venezuelan elections

On 6 December, the Venezuelan people will elect their representatives in the National Assembly.

In addition to their political diversity — there are 107 parties with 14 400 candidates for 277 seats — these elections potentially represent a democratic, constitutional and peaceful way out of the political and institutional gridlock created by Juan Guaidó declaring himself ‘interim president’ in January 2019, and following a number of attempted coups and calls for a military invasion of the country.

Despite the hopes for diplomacy among certain members of the opposition determined to set Venezuela on the road to democracy, the European Union decided not to send any observers, declining the invitation of the legitimate authorities of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela to monitor the elections.

In view of the above:

Are the reasons for the EU not sending observers linked to the economic, financial and diplomatic sanctions imposed by the US Administration on Venezuela and the Venezuelan people?

Will the EU respect the democratic choice of Venezuelans or will it remain subordinate to US policy against Venezuela and the Venezuelan people?
