Fact-finding exercise to address environmental concerns raised by the transport of goods sold through e-commerce

Question for written answer  E-001895/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Aurélia Beigneux (ID)

The environmental impact of e-commerce is an increasingly controversial topic. The French Senate’s Committee on Spatial Planning and Sustainable Development has therefore decided to conduct a fact-finding exercise on the transport of goods to address these environmental concerns. The committee wasted no time in launching a public consultation procedure with a view to obtaining answers to the following questions: Are consumers aware of the true environmental impact of having their online purchases delivered? Would having access to such information influence their behaviour, the nature of their purchases and the shipping options they select?

Joint action is needed at EU level to enable Europeans to be directly involved in tackling environmental issues. This could be done by conducting an EU-wide survey.

My question is the following:

Will the Commission also launch a fact-finding exercise, so that Europeans' views on this matter can be taken into account?
