Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council on the accessibility requirements for products and services

Question for written answer  E-006434/2020
to the Commission
Rule 138
Valter Flego (Renew)

It has been more than a year and a half since the adoption of the European Accessibility Act, i.e. the adoption of Directive (EU) 2019/882 of the European Parliament and of the Council on accessibility requirements for products and services, which marked a step forward for many citizens of the European Union towards a fair and inclusive Europe and towards improving the day-to-day lives of persons with disabilities, of which there are around 80 million in the European Union. Many of them experience difficulties using products and services for everyday use, such as smartphones, computers, e-books, card payment devices or ATMs. For this reason, many have welcomed the purpose of the Directive, which is to contribute to the proper functioning of the internal market by approximating laws, regulations and administrative provisions of the Member States as regards accessibility requirements for certain products and services, by, in particular, eliminating and preventing barriers arising from divergent accessibility requirements in the Member States to the free movement of certain accessible products and services. As Member States have three years to transpose the new rules into national law, i.e. to ensure compliance with the Directive, and as half of this time has already elapsed, is the Commission aware of the progress made or of any possible difficulties being faced by Member States in implementing this provision?
