Country-of-origin labelling
17.3.2021
Question for written answer E-001470/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Peter Lundgren (ECR)
Country-of-origin labelling currently applies to honey, fruit, vegetables, fish, beef and unprocessed meat from pigs, sheep, goats and poultry. It also applies to olive oil, wine, eggs and spirits. The farm-to-fork strategy seeks to increase labelling, but it is unclear what additional products will be covered, or what the label should look like. More product labelling creates more jobs and pushes up costs, which has given rise to the idea of marking products as being of EU origin and non-EU origin. For obvious reasons this is not popular in Parliament or in the Member States, as it obviates the whole point of origin labelling and will mean that consumers don’t know where the products are from.
- 1.What additional products does the Commission think should be covered by origin labelling?
- 2.How is the Commission intending to extend origin labelling without creating unnecessary burdens and costs for the market?
- 3.What does the Commission think about an EU and a non-EU label?
