European vehicle registration database
17.3.2021
Question for written answer E-001467/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Marc Tarabella (S&D)
Among the problems faced by national police forces in the EU are those related to vehicle registrations, insurance and a lack of access to data for vehicle checks.
With no Europe-wide vehicle registration database, police officers are unable to check the identity of drivers of vehicles registered abroad.
Also, a number of police forces have pointed out that drivers from country A often drive a vehicle registered in country B which is sometimes insured in country C. Furthermore, drivers’ documents may be so difficult to understand that any checks are a complete waste of time.
- 1.Does the Commission agree that it would be worth standardising insurance documents?
- 2.Furthermore, is the Commission in favour of setting up a European registration database that can be easily accessed by all European police forces?
- 3.Lastly, would it not be worth better coordinating and further harmonising legislation in this field?
