Situation in Myanmar

Question for written answer E-001988/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Loucas Fourlas (PPE)
For two months Myanmar has been the scene of violent clashes between protesters and the military junta, claiming the lives of hundreds, including children.
Furthermore, hundreds of political prisoners are being illegally detained in deplorable conditions that constitute a breach of human rights and an insult to any notion of human dignity.
The European Union condemns the indiscriminate and lethal violence being unleashed by the military junta and calls for all political prisoners to be released. Our show of unity must, however, be followed by deeds.
In view of this:
- 1.Can the Commission say what degree of commitment exists to bring further pressure to bear on the military junta?
- 2.Have plans been drawn up to secure an immediate cessation of hostilities and a return to order and calm?
