The effects of the COVID-19 health crisis on persons living with Down syndrome

Question for written answer  E-001435/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Agnès Evren (PPE)

The COVID-19 pandemic and the strict lockdown measures have affected persons with Down syndrome, also known as Trisomy 21, in particular, owing to their dependence on contact with other people and difficulties in accessing information on preventive measures.

World Down Syndrome Day on 21 March 2021 reminds us that persons with Down syndrome still experience many forms of discrimination linked to this genetic condition and that additional measures are needed to improve their quality of life and inclusion in society. People living with this syndrome must have access to medical checks, regular care and frequent contacts with health professionals, as well as a proper support system.

In the light of the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union, the UN Convention of the Rights of Persons with Disabilities and the European Pillar of Social Rights, will the Commission allocate additional funds to research into the long-term effects of COVID-19 on persons with Down syndrome, notably through Horizon Europe and the EU4Health programme?
