Serbia’s compliance with climate targets in the perspective of its accession to the European Union

Question for written answer  E-001968/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138
Ioan-Rareş Bogdan (PPE)

The European Union is the largest provider of financial assistance to Serbia, and substantial amounts are being invested in the Western Balkans.

However, one of the key pillars of Serbia’s application to join the European Union is the need for the Serbian authorities to comply with the targets set in the Paris Agreement and the European Green Deal.

In line with those climate objectives, we would draw attention to the situation in the region around the town of Bor, where the Chinese investor Zijin is triggering an environmental disaster. The Romanian minority in that region is being severely affected by what Zijin is doing. Moreover, that minority has complained about being subject to pressure and frequent threats, and is considering leaving the region.

Since Serbia is in accession negotiations with the EU, can the Commission state what steps it will take to prevent an environmental disaster in the region around Bor, where sulphur dioxide, arsenic and cadmium emission levels are far above the maximum permitted values and the contamination of rivers ends up polluting the Danube?
