Carbon dioxide in logged wood

to the Commission
Rule 138
Sara Skyttedal (PPE)
Paragraph 20 of the European Parliament’s own-initiative report entitled ‘A WTO-compatible EU carbon border adjustment mechanism’ reads: ‘20. Highlights that unlike the ETS [Emissions Trading System], the mechanism should not treat burning wood for fuel as carbon neutral and within the revised and updated framework the carbon embedded in logged wood and depleted soil should have a price’.
In my personal view, this is a very destructive approach to biomass. Those of us who see sustainable forest management as a major asset in the shift towards climate neutrality are hoping that the Commission will adopt a more constructive approach than that taken by a majority in the European Parliament in the vote on 10 March 2021.
In the light of the foregoing:
Does the Commission take the view that carbon dioxide emissions linked to logged wood – which are already accounted for in the EU as activities connected with land use, land-use change and forestry, and come under UNFCCC reporting requirements – should be double-counted in the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism and the ETS?
