Commission report of January 2021 entitled ‘Managing Migration. EU Financial Support to Greece’
22.2.2021
Question for written answer E-001039/2021
to the Commission
Rule 138

The report states that since 2015, Greece has received EUR 3.12 billion from the EU. According to the document, only EUR 2.22 billion of that has been used. Projects are named which have been carried out with the financial support of the European Union, but it is not clear what has been done with such a large amount of money. The fact that a new camp could be constructed within a week of the fires in the Moria camp clearly shows that there is no shortage of funds. The fact that the funds have not been exhausted makes the conditions which still prevail some five months after the fires inexplicable. A further EUR 4 billion was provided for Greece between September 2020 and January 2021.
- 1.Why has it not been possible, since 2015, to construct a camp with humane conditions on Lesbos from the EUR 3.12 billion available?
- 2.What is the explanation for such conditions as have existed in Moria since 2015, given that the available funding has not been exhausted?
- 3.What action has the Commission taken to ensure transparency in the field of financial support so that taxpayers can clearly see what is happening with their money?
