Rule 138

The human rights situation in Myanmar is deteriorating at an alarmingly rapid pace following the Tatmadaw’s coup of 1 Februay 2021. It has been reported that over 700 protestors and/or civilians have lost their lives in recent months as a consequence of the harsh crackdown by the Myanmar security forces. Many of the victims include minors and innocent civilians. Not only are the actions by the Myanmar military a direct violation of human rights, they also violate international norms and constitute crimes against humanity. The violence must stop immediately, and the EU must act now to keep the death toll from increasing.
- 1.How will the EU exert pressure on the Association of Southeast Asian Nations countries, neighbouring countries and countries with a vested interest in Myanmar, to urge the Tatmadaw to stop the repression and killings and respect the outcome of the democratic elections of November 2020?
- 2.Will the EU impose further sanctions if the situation continues to deteriorate?
